Renovation and Refurbishment
A luxury holiday home renovation (Allenhayes Road)

Salcombe, Devon

An architecturally-inspired semi-detached property with sea views in Salcombe, this contemporary house was initially purchased by a couple as a second home, with the ultimate intention of retiring to the South Hams. Having been introduced to the homeowners by estate agents at Luscombe Maye, we embarked on a project to transform its interiors so that they matched and celebrated its unique architecture.

Although the house was only 12 years old, there was an opportunity to bring it up to date with a renovation that focused on the quality of the finishes and carefully considered details. What began as a plan for a refresh turned into a much larger project as they developed their vision for the lifestyle they wanted to enjoy in the next phase of their lives.

Interior transformations

The focal point was an overhaul of the kitchen. It initially had two islands, which they wanted to turn into one expansive gathering space for the family, complete with a breakfast bar all around the edge. The island was topped with a single piece of quartz that was so large it had to be lifted into the property (which is on a steep Devon hillside), by crane.

The structure of the kitchen remained the same, with full height units along the back with two built-in ovens and two dishwashers as they enjoyed entertaining. However, we upgraded the appliances and installed slab doors on the cabinets, sprayed to order with Mylands' Grouse - a deep, warm neutral with hints of red and umber for a light, dusty brown finish that softened the contemporary space.

The creation of a feature fireplace with a log burner was also a key part of the renovations. The couple wanted to place the television on the wall above it, requiring works to heat-proof the wall so that it didn’t damage the electrics. In addition, the entire property was rewired and the master bedroom, dressing room, and ensuite were refurbished.

Indoor/outdoor living

With Devon lifestyles spanning both inside and out, a large part of the work involved the outside space.

The property had a total of 10 decking areas stepping away from the house, all of which needed replacing. We reduced that to eight more expansive areas, and used Millboard composite decking, which offers a high quality finish that's extremely durable and recommended for the coastal location. We also replaced the extensive glass balustrade with a seamless, brand new version that offers uninterrupted views, and landscaped the garden so that the family could maximise their time using the outside space as an integral part of daily life.

The result is a complete property update that will ensure the house is every inch a luxury home that delivers both form and function.
